We’ve all heard of the “first rule of holes,” have we not?
It goes something like, “If you find yourself in a hole, first stop digging.” It’s a rule that many politicians have either never heard of or which they find to be an anathema.
They cannot resist their compulsion to pour money into government programs regardless of how desperate their financial situation might be.
California would be a state where this rule should be implemented at once.
There are other states, such as Illinois, that are also eager contenders for the distinction of being the first state to actually go belly-up financially – although it’s not entirely clear how a state goes about declaring bankruptcy.
Los Angeles is not making things any better for itself as we learn that the state did something every American taxpayer will loathe:
California paid out almost $1.3 billion in welfare benefits JUST to illegal aliens.
Yes, this is money paid to illegal immigrants. The leadership of Los Angeles gives every indication of wanting to maximize its illegal immigrant population regardless of the cost.
Via Fox News:
“Illegal immigrant families received nearly $1.3 billion in Los Angeles County welfare money during 2015 and 2016, nearly one-quarter of the amount spent on the county’s entire needy population, according to data obtained by Fox News.
“The sanctuary county of Los Angeles is an illegal immigration epicenter, with the largest concentration of any county in the nation, according to a study from the Migration Policy Institute.
The county also allows illegal immigrant parents with children born in the United States to seek welfare and food stamp benefits.“
For all their claims about being the “party of the working man and woman,” it looks like the Democrats are also the party of the non-working illegal aliens.
Wonder who has to shoulder the cost for these illegals? Gee, possibly those same working men and women Democrats are supposedly championing.
“Robert Rector, a Heritage Foundation senior fellow who has written extensive studies on poverty and illegal immigration, said the costs represent ‘the tip of the iceberg.’
“He said the costs of education, police and fire, medical, and subsidized housing can total $24,000 per year in government spending per family, much more than would be paid in taxes.
“‘They get $3 in benefits for every $1 they spend,’ Rector said.”
STORY CONTINUES BELOW…
It may take their nemesis, President Trump, to save cities such as Los Angeles from their own folly, even though they’d never give him credit for it.
“The Trump presidency’s hardline immigration policies, though, may be playing some role in curtailing the population seeking welfare payments in recent months.
“The same stats show Los Angeles County is expected to dole out $200 million less this year than in 2016, and several thousand fewer families are collecting benefits.”
Normally, this reduction in welfare costs should be good news.
However, given the leftists in control of matters in Los Angeles and the state of California, there should be no expectation that they will utilize such savings wisely.
Accomplishing that would require replacement of current leadership with those who are fiscally responsible.
Unfortunately, they may have to suffer a complete financial breakdown before the electorate starts to wise up – and even then, these clueless liberals would probably opt to go down with the ship.
If so, good riddance.
