Maxine Waters is not one to shy away from controversy, nor is she one to use discretion when it comes to her daily business dealings.
In California, she has been running a particularly effective campaigning technique for years now that is headed by her daughter, Karen Waters.
This technique is known as a “slate mailer” and allows Waters to collect money from others running for various California offices in order for their names to be placed on these pamphlets that, in essence, claim to be endorsed by Waters herself.
In the interim, she has managed to pay her daughter hundreds of thousands of dollars since 2006.
She also has been able to help Kamala Harris attain both the Attorney General’s position in the Golden State and a vacated Boxer senator’s seat.
“Campaign committees for Democratic Sen. Kamala Harris (Calif.) twice paid tens of thousands to campaign committees for Democratic Rep. Maxine Waters (Calif.) in exchange for placement on a mailer announcing Waters’s endorsement of Harris, according to Federal Election Commission records.
Harris—who has garnered media attention and earned speculation that she is positioning herself to run for president in 2020 following her performance during recent Senate hearings, including that of former FBI Director James Comey—has kicked $63,000 to the campaign of Maxine Waters, the congressional face of the anti-Trump movement, in exchange for placement on the endorsement mailers.
The payments were made from Harris’s campaign committee and transferred to Waters’s campaign committee through a lucrative ‘slate mailer’ operation run by Waters’s daughter, a program that has proved profitable for both her daughter and the campaign.
On May 5, 2010, when Harris was a San Francisco district attorney and running for attorney general in the state, her campaign committee, Kamala Harris For AG 2010, paid Waters’s campaign committee, Citizens for Waters, $20,000 to appear on her slate mailer announcing the endorsement. Harris made three payments totaling $33,000 to Waters’s campaign committees throughout the 2010 election cycle. Harris won her election for attorney general.”
Buying votes and supporters isn’t anything new in the world of politics. Being so brazen about it is, and you get one guess as to which party is allowed to be brazen about everything it does.
You might be wondering why, with all this going on, Waters would not just clam up and lie low for a little while. It’s because she’s not a Republican.
