President Obama stood behind the podium for his final end-of-year news conference and lied through his teeth.
The man who has supposedly stood for “hope” certainly appeared hopeless as he lobbed accusations toward the President-elect, the Republican Party, the media, and the American people themselves, sounding more like a sour grapes loser than a man who has spent the last eight years trumpeting his achievements.
Politico’s Edward-Isaac Dovere spends a good amount of time diving into the minutiae of Obama’s answers to the press corps, and subtly lands a few jabs.
In a line that appears to be showing the animosity Obama has toward the incoming Administration, Dovere takes a moment to ensure that the audience knows that Obama would rather be anywhere else than here:
“Standing at the podium in the White House briefing room, with Air Force One ready to take him and the rest of the first family to Hawaii, Obama said that he’s worried about threats that go much deeper than even that, or an incoming administration that appears aimed at ripping up the work of his presidency.”
While an enormous portion of the answers related how deeply ensconced Team Trump was with the Russian “interlopers” (according to Obama) the piece points out how flimsy the evidence actually is regarding such collusion. The President even references Ronald Reagan as he bemoans how modern politics has gone into a recent death spiral:
“Ronald Reagan would be rolling over in his grave.” (Just for the record, Ronald Reagan began rolling over in his grave the minute the Clintons began renting out the Lincoln Bedroom).
Much of what was discussed regarding the Russians and their historic interference was met with reporters’ questions about the assessments of the intelligence agencies and what they had to say about how they came to such conclusions.
It appeared that Obama lacked the necessary answers, according to Politico:
“Asked repeatedly about the intelligence assessments that the Russians were behind the hack, that Putin was personally involved, that it targeted Democrats, that it was meant to take down Hillary Clinton, Obama said it was so obvious he didn’t need to say it out loud, going instead for shrugs, big sarcastic frowns, upturned hands, eyes wide open and eyebrows almost hitting his hairline: “Well, come on,” he said.”
Taking personal umbrage, it seemed, at the inference that he and his Administration had purposefully shut down the “smooth transition” promise that was made a month ago, Obama bristled: “That’s absurd.”
As previously noted, the outgoing President made sure to throw some in the media under the Hillary bus as well, although it should be noted that he was specifically referring to outlets that were “partisan” (i.e., Fox News, Drudge, Breitbart, etc.).
“If fake news that’s being released by some foreign government is almost identical to reports that are being issued through partisan news venues, then it’s not surprising that that foreign propaganda will have a greater effect,” he said.
[F]olks care about their families. They care about having meaningful work, they care about making sure their kids have more opportunity than they did. They want to be safe. They want to feel like things are fair.”
Washington and American politics under his presidency, he acknowledged, had ultimately failed in that.
Let’s face facts: there won’t be any crocodile tears shed over the gratifying end of this, perhaps one of the most, if not THE most, divisive presidency in the history of this country. The country has found true, real “hope” at last and the “change” is fast approaching.
Anyone who desired a Hillary presidency may be depressed and in need of serious therapy, but the ones who desired an anyone-but-Hillary presidency got rewarded with a Trump presidency instead. Great things are coming our way!
