President Trump is just rockin’ and rollin’ right out of the gate.
He crushed the opposition and made good on his promise with his wall-building executive order, and despite the predictable liberal backlash, most true-blue Americans understand just how necessary this course of action really is.
But of course, Mexico isn’t very happy with President Donald Trump right now – particularly President Enrique Pena Nieto.
Is it because Trump and the Republicans basically just said, take BACK your criminals or else? Well, that’d be a pretty good guess but no.
Pena Nieto is upset because Trump is going forward with tight border security, something the Mexico boss spent months decrying as racist and bigoted against Mexican migrants.
But Trump’s doing something else that was on his promised list of things to do once president…and this is REALLY making Pena Nieto see red.
“Trump,” the New York Post reported, “intends to pay for the coming U.S.-Mexico wall with a 20 percent tax on all imports coming from Mexico, White House spokesman Sean Spicer said.”
Yes, you read that right: 20 percent.
That’s going to be a significant dent to Mexico’s already sluggish economy.
“‘If you tax that $50 billion at 20 percent of imports – which is by the way a practice that 160 other countries do – right now our country’s policy is to tax exports and let imports flow freely in, which is ridiculous,’ Spicer told reporters aboard Air Force One. Spicer said the new tax would generate $10 billion a year and ‘easily pay for the wall,'” the New York Post said.
If that seems steep – oh, well. YOU don’t think Americans should pay entirely for the wall, right? Vote now if you haven’t already.
Trump’s been saying for some time that America’s trade agreements are putting the United States second and all the other countries of the world first. And he also has promised that his administration would rectify that trade disparity to reflect an America First policy.
At the same time, Mexico was told for months on the campaign trail by Trump that he’d make that country pay for a new border wall for America. And while Mexico and its president have painted those promises as bigoted, and said outright Mexico wasn’t going to pay, Trump will have the last word.
And it goes something like this: Yes, Mexico, you will be paying for that wall, one way or the other.
