With all the media focus on issues like healthcare and the bogus Russia/Trump stories, Syria has been relegated to the back pages.
At least, that’s how it was until Trump recently decided to make a major policy move concerning the ongoing war.
For quite a while now, the US has actively armed and aided rebel groups in Syria. This strategy has been employed for decades by our intelligence apparatus and needless to say, it usually backfires in the end.
The neocons and foreign policy hawks on both sides of the aisle kicked and screamed until Obama finally gave assistance to Islamic groups deemed “moderate.”
But the all-too many hawks infesting DC are always far too willing to offer weaponry to groups that would best be described as enemies of our enemies.
Now, much to the establishment’s dismay, Trump has decided to cut this assistance for the exact reason voters said to: because these so-called moderates aren’t at all moderate.
As reported at ZeroHedge, Trump’s unpopular decision to end the CIA’s “covert” Syria program came as a shock to many policy wonks, but will be welcomed with open arms by those who voted for him.
Thomas Joscelyn, a Middle East analyst for the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, explains in the August edition of The Weekly Standard:
“Earlier this year, President Donald Trump was shown a disturbing video of Syrian rebels beheading a child near the city of Aleppo.
It had caused a minor stir in the press as the fighters belonged to the Nour al-Din al-Zenki Movement, a group that had been supported by the CIA as part of its rebel aid program.”
The footage itself is horrifying.
Five bearded men smile as they surround a boy in the back of a pickup truck. One of them holds the boy’s head with a tight grip on his hair while another mockingly slaps his face. Then, one of them uses a knife to saw the child’s head off and holds it up in the air like a trophy.
Trump pressed his most senior intelligence advisers, asking them how the CIA came to have a relationship with such monsters.
The answers they gave weren’t satisfying to the president, so he cut the program.
This certainly isn’t the only footage of “moderate” groups doing horrific things. A cursory Google search and trip to LiveLeak will turn your stomach, wondering how on earth such animals were deemed worthy of working with by the CIA.
Sure, there are times when we need to work with disgusting characters/groups to pursue a policy aim, but this isn’t one of them.
There’s little to gain and a lot to lose in Syria, not to mention the incredibly bleak prospects and unlikely chance of stability even should our “side” emerge victorious.
