There are a couple of ways to approach this acrimonious debate over so-called sanctuary cities.
One would be to look at what is happening at face value and decide whether it’s legal or not.
In other words, do local jurisdictions have the authority to abstain from cooperating with federal law enforcement authorities as they seek to enforce federal laws?
Can cities advertise to those who have violated federal law that they may flee to them to receive protection against arrest for the specific crimes attached to illegal immigration?
It would seem that the answer to all these question is the same: No.
And beyond that, pitting local law enforcement personnel against federal law enforcement personnel seems like a very bad idea.
But the other approach to the problem is to ask what impact the “sanctuary city” label has on the level of crime experienced in that jurisdiction.
As much as the left would prefer to argue otherwise, the example of Phoenix indicates that abandoning sanctuary city status lowers crime rates.
Via Fox News:
“A six-year study published last year by the University of California, Riverside found ‘violent crime is slightly higher in sanctuary cities.’
It concluded there was ‘no statistically discernible difference in violent crime rates, rape, or property crime across’ 55 cities studied.”
Rather inconclusive, but clearly becoming a sanctuary city does not help reduce crime. That much we know.
Phoenix, on the other hand, “saw a drop in crime after it eliminated its sanctuary city status, according to former law enforcement officials.”
“‘When we eliminated our sanctuary policy back in 2008, we saw crime, violent and stolen vehicles fall by 25 percent,’ he [Levi Bolton, executive director to the Arizona Police Association] recalled.
STORY CONTINUES BELOW…
‘We saw a 20-year low crime rate. When we were allowed and had the discretion to contact our federal immigration partners, crime fell drastically.'”
The creation of sanctuary cities effectively tells illegal immigrants that they needn’t obey all the laws of our country.
So perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised when they decide to pick and choose what other laws they might wish to break.
Police and other law enforcement officials have been speaking the truth for years, but liberals have always squashed those messages…now, however, the truth keeps coming out at every turn.
And America is sick and tired of paying the price for the gigantic mistake that is Sanctuary Cities.
